Work Needed! This looks like a great project to do with students to help raise their social awareness!!

One Million Bones is a large-scale social arts practice, which means we use education and hands-on artmaking to raise awareness of genocides and atrocities going on around the world, this very day.
We are collecting artwork bones for a collaborative installation of 1,000,000 bones on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. in the spring of 2013. This installation will serve as a collaborative site of conscience to remember victims and survivors, and as a visible petition to raise awareness of the issue and call upon our government to take much needed and long overdue action.

The national coordinator is ephraim@onemillionbones.org
The Virginia coordinator is alana.onemillionbones@gmail.com

Youth Art Month 2012 "Mapping the Unknown"

March 2012: Youth Art Show @ The Jefferson Center. This year's theme is "Mapping the Unknown." Please try your best to have your students participate. We are expecting to install on February 26.

Map Resources: (Follow links to view the books on Amazon)

In The Map as Art, Harmon collects 360 colorful, map-related artistic visions by well-known artists—such as Ed Ruscha, Julian Schnabel, Olafur Eliasson, William Kentridge, and Vik Muniz—and many more less-familiar artists for whom maps are the inspiration for creating art.

Mapmaking fulfills one of our most ancient and deepseated desires: understanding the world around us and our place in it. But maps need not just show continents and oceans: there are maps to heaven and hell; to happiness and despair; maps of moods, matrimony, and mythological places. Artists' maps show another kind of uncharted realm: the imagination.
You Are Here is a wide-ranging collection of such superbly inventive maps.

In each spread of this bold and humorous picture book, available for the first time since 1995, children can examine their place in the world around them through detailed and engaging maps. Twelve beautifully illustrated maps such as Map of My Day and Map of My Tummy will fascinate children. When finished reading the book, children can unfold the jacket -- it turns into a poster-size map!

Plus....

This month's FREE digital edition of School Arts magazine has a great elementary lesson included called Mapping the Heart. Click on the title to see the digital edition of the magazine. By the way, the digital edition is always free. On the main site, you can find lots of digitized back issues where you explore lots of different lesson ideas!

Youth Art Month: Under the Microscope

Just a reminder, the installation for Youth Art Month is next Saturday! I've copied the info below. The reception/takedown is still not confirmed, but I will let you know when I have a definite date.

Thanks!

Theme: Under the Microscope
Place: The Jefferson Center in Downtown Roanoke
Dates:

Hanging: March 5, 12-2 pm
Reception: TBA
Take Down: TBA

Sorry the reception date and take down date are not yet determined. I wanted to make sure that you had as much time as possible to get work completed. I will let you know ASAP when the dates are set.

Preparation: Your work must be ready to be hung. The hanging system at the Jefferson Center consists of a piece of molding with a wire that comes down and ties onto the wire on the back of your work. Please come prepared. No artwork should be taped to the wall. All sculptures should be displayed on a pedestal. You are responsible for supplying the pedestal.
Label: See the attached document for a label format. Print this on white paper and mount it to black construction paper, creating a nice simple border. These labels can be taped to the wall beside the artwork with gaffers tape. The tape will be provided by the Jefferson Center. DO NOT use any other tape on the walls.

Hanging: If you cannot make it on the date to hang the artwork, please make arrangements to have your work hung by another member or contact a member of the board.

Answers to common questions:
How many pieces can I bring?- As many as you'd like.
Do I need to have it framed? Not necessary, but all work must be ready to be hung.
Can I bring sculpture? Yes, if you bring your own display table/stand/pedestal.
Can I _________? Yes, we trust you!!! This is an Art Educators organization- we trust that you are intelligent and creative. We do not want to stifle your creativity by setting a lot of limits. We give you a general theme and let you go to town with however you choose. We only hope that participation grows and you have a good time being with us. We're in a box all day and hope that these activities give you a chance to get out of that box- in more than one way! *Please note: all age groups and a variety of religious organizations use the Jefferson Center. Please make sure the artwork is respectful of this.

Please let me know if you plan to participate in this wonderful opportunity to showcase your students' work. Have a great day!
